Yes, this is the image of Britain you find, if you read the newspapers or watch the television shows. Very strange stuff, especially if you spend your days in the BL reading Wilkes or his friends, or touring the great historical sites.
The more time I spend reading Wilkes and his correspondence, the more I feel that JW, in his own words, cannot explain his appeal. Only as he appears in others’ eyes, in anecdotes and histories.
PS: Then again, the best antidote to all the binge drinking etc. etc. is the radio, one of the pleasures of an extended stay here.
